The modern-day Bring a Trailer Pick is a restomodified 1974 BMW 2002tii.

From the outside, a classic BMW 2002’s austere style has a stern appearance. This all-black design manages to have a clerical air about it, with hands clasped and religious intent. Much like a priest’s cassock or a nun’s habit. However, as David E. Davis, Jr., a former editor of Car & Driver, once stated, “Turn your hymnals to Number 2002. And we’ll sing two choruses of Whispering Bomb.” A 2002tii is for us quick sinners, not for saints.

A 1974 BMW 2000tii in black and chrome is today’s pick over at Bring A Trailer, a Hearst Autos publication like Car and Driver. Its delicacy and simplicity contrast sharply with the current portfolio of the brand, which includes elaborate coupes and the XM SUV, whose enormous twin grilles give it an unsettling likeness to Pumba from The Lion King.

A 2002 is like a meerkat to an XM: nimble, graceful, and skillful. The 114-hp carburetted version of this nimble little car thrilled Davis to the point where his 1968 evaluation of it is now regarded as one of the best automotive reviews of all time.

“In my opinion, the 2002 is one of the best ways to travel while seated in all of contemporary civilization. It seizes you.

This 1974 2002’s tii suffix denotes additional power under the hood, courtesy of Kugelfisher mechanical fuel injection. When properly outfitted, the bubbly little 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces 125 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque while crooning merrily over a stainless-steel exhaust. It is coupled with a limited-slip rear differential and a five-speed manual from a later model vehicle. When testing a 2002tii, Patrick Bedard of Car and Driver noted:

You can’t help but like it, no matter how hard you try. The absence of strobe stripes, fake teardrop racing mirrors, and triple turret taillights is the core of automotive reality. Just refined machinery in a case made of steel and glass. It also works. The fuel-injected engine may force the rider to breathe heavily and it handles with the dexterity of a professional flanker back.
